The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

This unit covers the competency required to maintain and fit oxygen masks.

This unit of competency has been written for masks fitted to aviation aircrew and would normally include communication devices. However, there may be other applications. Integral to the fitting of the mask is the integration of the mask and the helmet to the person.

Maintaining an oxygen mask includes inspecting, testing, isolating faults, replacing, cleaning and testing prior to placing the item back into service.

Fitting an oxygen mask includes adjusting the mask to fit the individual because the item is not an off-the-shelf issue.

Assessment must confirm the ability to correctly fit oxygen masks to a minimum of three different people with no corrective action required by supervisor; to recognise a range of faults including incorrect manufacture; to correct a minimum of three unserviceable oxygen masks; and to work safely with oxygen.
